2013 was a first for the Pittsburgh Steelers; they didn't make the playoffs.
When referring to how teams conduct free agency and how they draft, I always refer to the Steelers or the Patriots as the perfect model for how teams should; keep your players in free agency, don't overspend, and select best player available.
So with that being said, we can focus on team needs for the Steelers but honestly, when it comes down to it, it'll probably be the best player that falls to them at 15 who gets selected and I'll gush over the pick.
It feels like I've been saying this for years now; the Steelers need a cornerback. They need someone to go across from Ike Taylor and potentially replace him very soon because Taylor isn't getting any younger.
Someone like Darqueze Dennard out of Michigan State could be the pick here. He is a very physical, press man corner, who isn't afraid to lay his body on the line in the run game. He would certainly fit Steelers physical play on defense.
2. Nose Tackle
This is a very big need for the Pittsburgh Steelers to finally find a replacement for Casey Hampton. However, nose tackles are the most important position to be addressing with a first round pick but if they like a guy that much why not?
One guy that comes to mind that could potentially be the pick is nose tackle Louis Nix out of Notre Dame. He needs to be better at the point of attack but Nix isn't afraid to attempt to run down a player and deffinitely clogs the middle at times.
3. Offensive Lineman
The Pittsburgh Steelers could use an offensive lineman every offseason. It seems like no matter who they bring in (besides Pouncey) they never produce and the line as whole continues to get Big Ben killed.
A guy that could be on the Steelers radar is Zack Martin, tackle out of Notre Dame. The thing with Zack Martin is he's a solid tackle, but with short arms and quick feet, he has the ability to play guard as well. Versatility is huge on the offensive line especially with a team with limit set starters as a unit.
4. TIght End and Wide Receiver
Heath Miller is getting old and the injuries might be catching up to him. Also, Emmanuel Sanders and Jerricho Cotchery both left in free agency. The Pittsburgh Steelers seem like they are in win now mode as their team is getting very old so bringing in big weapons would be ideal.
Tight end Eric Ebron out of North Carolina could easily be available at 15 and would provide a huge playmaker next to Antonio Brown. Also, wide receiver could also be the pick, even though the Steelers, and myself, are a huge Markus Wheaton fan.
What I Would Do
Like I said earlier, I love the way the Steelers draft. So with that being said, I'm going to draft like them no matter what team I have. If that's the case, I'm taking best player available or trading down.
The weird thing about this year is usually the Steelers take the best player wihtout them really filling a need. Not this year. I expect Eric Ebron, tight end out of North Carolina, who is the best tight end prospect to come out since Vernon Davis went in the top ten to be the pick.
He is an exceptional talent and fills a need on a win now team. This would also be a best player available selection but I would gush over this one as well.
