Replacing a legend is never easy.
Geno Smith is a legend in these parts. Not since Major Harris has there been a quarterback with as much moxie and chutzpah as Smith. Now, he must be replaced.
Paul Millard and Clint Trickett? Those are the options the Mountaineers are left with. Even with the changes behind center, this is an offense that looks pretty sharp all around. On the defense, that is another story. The line and linebackers need to be more effective and need to put more pressure on the quarterback.
And if the pressures of defensive improvements are enough, then the idea of playing in the Big-12 might have an effect on West Virginia.
Here is a look at the upcoming season for the Mountaineers…
August 31 William & Mary Seriously? I did not know William & Mary still had a football team. Should the Mountaineers dial this one in? WVU 72-0.
September 7 @ Oklahoma Now we get serious. The Sooners also will start a new quarterback. The Sooners are loaded on defense. This could be a shootout or a very low scoring game. Win goes to the home team. Sooners 18-14.
September 14 Georgia State The Panthers come to town. But his panther does not strike fear in anyone. Look for West Virginia to use its ground game wisely. WVU 63-3.
September 21 Maryland This could be a very good game. As a team who is playing its last season in the ACC. The Mountaineers look better on offense and win at home. WVU 42-20.
September 28 Oklahoma St. The Cowboys come to the mountains. How will a secondary that is mediocre handle the Cowboys passing offense? Cowboys win 31-21.
October 5 @ Baylor The Bears are better than you might think, but the Mountaineers are better. The Bears are still trying to replace RGIII and now have to replace half their defense. WVU 30-17.
October 19 Texas Tech This is the Homecoming Game for the Mountaineers. The Red Raiders have been known for a fast-paced offense. Will West Virginia be able to keep up? WVU 29-27.
October 26 @ Kansas State This is still a really good team. But Kansas State will be replacing a quarterback and part of its offense. Still, winning in Manhattan is a hard thing to do. Kansas State 20-16.
November 2 @ TCU Another one of those teams that is known for its offense. Can the Horned Frogs light it up at home against the Mountaineers pass rush? WVU 24-20.
November 9 Texas Mack Brown always has his team ready to play. Interesting to see how the Mountaineers do against their biggest home opponent of the year. Texas 23-20.
November 16 @ Kansas Rock Chalk Jayhawk. While the basketball team gets the pub, the football team needs some help. The Mountaineers can call this one in. WVU 38-2.
November 30 Iowa State The Cyclones come to Morgantown. How will the team play against a team that in the bottom half of the division, but is generally big up front on both sides of the line. WVU 24-12.
