At this point in the season things are starting to look a little clearer but it is that time of the season when the BYE weeks start and you are scrambling to find a replacement for the week; here are the top waiver wire pick-ups for each position in Week 4.
Quarterback: Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs have started the season 3-0 and Alex Smith is doing his part by efficiently running the offense.
Smith is not flashy, but he gets it done and will continue to do so as they are at home this week and are facing the beat down NY Giants who are surprising everyone themselves by being one of the worse defenses in the NFL.
Smith is an average fantasy QB, but this week, Smith has the opportunity to put on a show. If you have Aaron Rodgers or Cam Newton who are on a BYE week, grab this guy.
Running Back: Marcel Reece, Oakland Raiders
Ok, you have to be really desperate if you are grabbing a running back off the waiver wire just because of a BYE week, which tells me, you didn’t compare BYE weeks when you grabbed your top two running backs on draft day.
Hey, we all make mistakes and we all have cold beverages at our drafts; this stuff happens. So if you are desperate, grab Marcel Reese this week and he could get you 7-10 points easily.
The Raiders are facing the Redskins who rank 30th against the run. The Raiders will be without Terrelle Pryor this week and could depend more on the running game, therefore, Reece may see more action this week than he normally would.
He is mostly beneficial to PPR leagues as he was targeted 5 times last week. Desperate times call for desperate measures and you could do much worse than Marcel Reece.
Wide Receiver: Jerricho Cotchery, Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are heading to jolly old England to face the Minnesota Vikings. Both of these teams are 0-3 and someone has to win. The Vikings will be without QB Christian Ponder this week and Big Ben (not the clock) is chomping at the big for a win.
The Vikings rank 28th against the pass and last week against the Bears, the Steelers put on an air show in the loss. Jerricho Cotchery has 10 catches for 145 yards so far this year and since the coverage will be about stopping Antonio Brown, this could free up Cotchery and I truly believe he has a big game in England.
He is the teams 2nd leading receiver and due to the fact the Steelers have failed to impress, he is more than likely sitting on your leagues waiver wire. The matchup is too good to not at least think about grabbing him.
Tight End: Scott Chandler, Buffalo Bills
The Bills take on the Baltimore Ravens who rank 24th against Tight Ends in fantasy scoring. They have not given up a TD to a tight end since Week 1 but they have given up an average of 5 catches per game to opposing tight ends.
EJ Manuel has started going to Chandler more each week and he could likely become a Top 10 tight end before the end of the season as he has been solid every year no matter the QB.
If you have room to carry two tight ends on your roster, grab him and start him this week if your normal starting Tight End is on BYE.
Defense: Let’s face it, the most picked up position during BYE weeks is the Defense/ST position. This week these teams to pick up are based on match ups and recent performances: Buffalo, Indy, Minnesota and San Diego.
Kicker: I have no specific kickers to mention here as your own research is best in this case. Try to find a dome kicker if you can. That is simple, yet effective advice for a BYE week filler PK.
