September is finally here and we all know what that means, football season is here.
Two teams that were in the offseason spotlight, the New Orleans Saints and the Washington Redskins, will strap up their helmets on Sunday and get it on at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
This game brings story lines galore such as the suspension of Saints head coach Sean Payton and the leader of their defense, Jonathan Vilma, to the much awaited regular season debut of Redskins rookie quarterback, Robert Griffin III.
This game has all the makings of a quick start and a thrilling ending which I believe will have most people tuned in to watch from finish to start.
Here are three bold predictions that will determine the outcome to this game.
1. Robert Griffin III will put up big numbers against the Saints' defense. Now, we all know the Saints' offense can put up points faster than they can fill the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras, but the defense has been fairly shaky for a while now.
Lets not forget they lost a few players to free agency and suspension. There aren't any real play-makers on this Saints team that the Redskins have to account for.
Seeing that the Saints can put points on the board, the Redskins will probably have to throw the ball a little bit more than they want and that's where Griffin comes in.
He can do it through the passing game and running the football with efficiency and I look for him to throw multiple touchdowns in this game and may run for another as well. Griffin will have to up his game especially with the Saints playing at home, where they have eclipsed the 40-point mark four times last year.
2. Saints will never trail in this game. The Redskins look like they have finally started to put a team together that will compete in the future but it won't help them this Sunday.
The Redskins will put up a fight in this one but the Saints seem to have that chip on their shoulders from all the scandals and suspension they have endured throughout the offseason.
Lets not forget that it took them a while to re-sign their best player and quarterback Drew Brees so he may have something to prove as well after receiving his hefty pay day. Regardless if Griffin has a great first game, he will not be able to keep up with Brees and their top-tier offense at home.
3. Saints win this game by double-digits over the Redskins. I believe Robert Griffin and his offense will have a good showing his first game but I don't think it will be enough to keep up with the Saints' high-powered offense.
The Saints have too much to prove and to get off their chest when they take the field Sunday afternoon at home and may be too much for the Redskins.
This game could see both teams get off to a quick start, putting points on the board in a hurry but Drew Brees and Co. have been doing this together for a while now and will not miss a beat after all they have been through.
Griffin will make the typical rookie mistake that will give the Saints the opportunity to separate themselves and take a commanding lead in this one. Its not that the Redkins' defense isn't good enough, it's the chemistry and the fact that the Saints are playing at home that makes a big difference.
Saints 37, Redskins 24
