Washington Redskins Should Pursue Kyle Orton

There are a lot of things the Redskins need to improve on, but one of the biggest things is their quarterback situation.
Rex Grossman isn't terrible, but he's not very good, either. He doesn't exude much confidence, which is something the 'Skins badly need. Despite the fact that they have decent players like Santana Moss, Tim Hightower and Chris Cooley, they don't play like a team that has confidence in their abilities. I think they've let their bad image beat them down over the past couple of years to a point where they've forgotten that they used to be a good team.
They finished 8-8 in 2008 and went to the playoffs the year before that. It's easy to point fingers at Mike Shanahan since they didn't get really bad until he came in, but I don't think he deserves all of the blame. True, his tendency to play musical chairs with the quarterbacks is a little baffling, but I think that's a symptom of a bigger problem.
The Redskins don't need another Joe Theismann to win games. Heck, they made it to the playoffs in '07 with Jason Campell. What they need is a quarterback who has confidence and ability. Someone with experience with multiple offenses (aka not Donovan McNabb). Someone like Kyle Orton.
Orton, I feel, would be a good fit in Washington. He's more mobile, more athletic, and more accurate than Grossman. Granted, his completion rate isn't much more than Grossman's, but he has a lot more experience and has way more passing yards. I also think Moss and Cooley would benefit from his presence, in particular. They're good with short, accurate passes.
Now, I know what some people will say. Donovan McNabb seemed like a good idea for the Skins, too, and look how that turned out. I can't pretend to know exactly what went wrong there, but I think a big part of it was due to the fact that McNabb played with a different kind of offense for 11 years. Change is hard for some players. Kyle Orton has played for a couple of different teams for almost equal amounts of time, and he's still managed to put up decent numbers. Do I think he could take the Skins to the Superbowl? Probably not, but I definitely think he could take them to the playoffs.
