Hosts Steve Bennett and Don Russ interview the biggest names in sports media and pop culture each week on Football Nation's The Sports-Casters podcast.

Their guest this week is Rob Gehring (28:45) a senior producer at NFL Films and the director of the hit HBO show, "Hard Knocks." The ground-breaking sports reality show takes place in Miami this year and debuts Aug. 7. Gehring says the battle at quarterback in Miami between Matt Moore, David Garrard and rookie Ryan Tannehill will be one of the biggest storylines of the summer.

He also offers insight into the process that goes into selecting a team to be featured on "Hard Knock, " chats about Chad Johnson's return to the program and shares insight into the technology used to produce the show.

Gehring also says:

  • A rookie head coach was a big reason they were selected to be featured on "Hard Knocks"
  • "Hard Knocks" has evolved and avoided getting complacent over the years

  • Everything that airs on '"Hard Knocks" has been shot in the previous week to ten days
  • The opening show is going to focus on the beginning of camp, the first day of players in pads, and the development of some of the characters we will meet this summer

Steve and Don kick off each podcast with "3 Things" but manage to tackle so much more. In this week's segment they discuss the upcoming Hall of Fame ceremony, Steve Smith donating $100,000 to the victims of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy, and the tragic suicide of O.J. Murdock. Also, Steve and Don chat about the battle for a roster spot at WR in Seattle, the Bengals decision to extend Marvin Lewis, and the new of Kyle Boller’s retirement.
