Colts owner Jim Irsay set off every skyrocket that he could in trying to build up Wednesday's story, hours before it broke. Eyes were rolled, and scoffs were heard.

Then it happened. The doubters were floored.

In-season trades of high magnitude are rare, but Irsay dropped a bombshell in trading Indianapolis' 2014 first-round draft pick for Browns running back, and 2012 first-rounder, Trent Richardson.

Richardson leaves the Browns after 18 games to fill the void left by the injured Vick Ballard, who tore his ACL in practice a week ago.

Here's a look at some significant in-season trades over the last thirty years, with some being more fruitful than others.

as an l.a. rams fan back then, the dickerson trade was a complete shock. but eric wanted to be paid more than my stingy rams wanted to pay him. very few got paid back then except johnnie johnson and jim everett. dickerson set the single season record in 84 then held out in 85. when he returned he had an off year which was still better than many backs. 86 he was again up around 1800 yrs. when 87 came he was again griping about money. he pulled himself out of a monday night game where the rams where getting their butts handed to them by bernie kosar and the browns and he was traded away soon after....it was a mistake by the rams, but he had griped and pissed off coach john robinson once too often
