With the 13th overall pick in the draft the St.Louis Rams selected Aaron Donald, defensive tackle out of the University of Pittsburgh. The 6'0 284 pound defensive tackle is a bit undersized, but makes up for that with his quickness. The defensive tackle ran a 4.68 40-yard dash at the scouting combine.
In 2013, Donald registered 54 tackles and 11 sacks, ranking him 12th in the NCAA at getting after the quarterback.
Usually a defensive lineman coming into the league with such success automatically grabs the attention of offensive line coaches, allowing them to make it a point to slow down the player. But with Donald joining the Rams, that just is not possible to do.
The Rams arguable have one of the best front sevens in football led by pass rushers Robert Quinn and Chris Long. Quinn registered an outstanding 19 sacks in 2013, while Long tallied up 8.5. Aaron Donald will see one-on-one matchups all game long alongside fellow defensive tackle Michael Brockers, who is no scrub himself.
Aaron Donald will be a disruption in the passing game, but his ability to play the run should not be overlooked either. His 54 tackles from the defensive tackle position is outstanding. All-pro Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh registered 47 in 2013. Donald will be able to use his size as an advantage to quickly shed blocks, blowing up running backs in the backfield.
The St.Louis Rams will have the best defensive line not only in the NFC, but the NFL. Aaron Donald will be a huge part of that, and he will be the 2014 defensive rookie of the year.
