Things might be getting a bit tougher in Tallahassee these days.
Not that the Florida State Seminoles are doing anything different then they have been all season long, but because the end of the year’s schedule is not an imposing one – which may force head coach Jimbo Fisher to keep his players focused on the prize in front of them.
An ACC Championship awaits them in December and a possible National Title in January. Ah, good things come to those who wait, as my grandmother always said to me.
Ain’t it great to be a Seminole this time of season?
The Seminoles beat the daylight out of Wake Forest last week, but it was the defense that looked more in sync than the offense.
Quarterback Jameis Winston did not wow us with anything special and for once, may have had a poor day – but it was not his fault as much as it was the caliber of team he and the Noles were playing. Wake Forest could not get out of their own way in the 59-3 FSU win, but the defense set the tone with two touchdowns, six interceptions and a stifling run defense.
Fisher is proving to everyone that the Seminoles can beat you on both sides of the ball, and while Winston is the apple of everyone’s eyes, he is not the only engine in the shed.
Syracuse is one of the two new kids on the block in the ACC. A new coach and new quarterback have not stopped the Orange from have a decent showing in the team’s first season.
Flashing back to the first game of the season FSU played at Pittsburgh, the other new adopted child of the ACC. Winston was near perfect in a 41-14 win. Do the Noles, who are playing a much better brand of ball now, do the same thing or worse to their opponent?
Here are three things to know about this game.
Winston will show off in this game
Style points count – as we all know.
Jameis Winston will show off a bit in this game. He did not have a great outing last week and played sparingly. Jacob Coker is injured and out for the season, which means you will see the freshman sensation for a longer period of time – maybe the whole game.
If Winston does not throw for 400 yards and four touchdowns in the game, there is something wrong with the FSU offense.
The running game will get a bit better
Is there a better trio than Devonta Freeman, James Wilder, Jr., and Karlos Williams? All three could be a lead back at any school in the country. Fisher is just blessed to have all three of them running the ball up in Tallahassee.
Look for Williams to get the lion share of carries in this game as his progress continues. In time Williams could be the best back to come out of Tallahassee since the days of Sammie Smith, and that is saying a lot.
Same start, same results
Look for Florida State to come out and put the foot on the gas. I think there was plenty of things Fisher expressed to his team about let downs and trap games. Syracuse is not a traditional ACC team, so there could be some hiccups during the contest.
Look for the defense to come out firing again on all cylinders and also look for Winston to put up monster numbers to again solidify himself as the frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy.
