What a first week for Chip Kelly & Co. in Training Camp. There seems to be enough story lines for an entire offseason -- not just a few days.
1. Chip Kelly Adjusts Well To The NFL
Kelly has not only received the full 100 percent support of his players, the fans have quickly taken a liking to him as well.
He made practice for the Eagles open to the public at Lincoln Financial Field, selling a whopping 65,000 tickets.
2. Quarterback Controversy; Barkley Looks Good
Great, just what the Eagles need. Another quarterback challenging for the starting position. While Michael Vick and Nick Foles are surely the front-runners, rookie Barkley is apparently looking good at camp.
"He gets the ball out quickly. He's a distributor. He's like a really good point guard in basketball," GM Howie Roseman said. While it isn't a point-guard the Eagles need, (76ers could use one) Barkley seems to have the support of the front office. Only time will tell how this story unfolds.
3. Jeremy Maclin Tears ACL -- Out For Season
This is a seriously sad story. Easily one of the top contributors for the Eagles, and surely one of the hardest working, Jeremy Maclin suffered a torn ACL on Saturday ultimately ending his season.
For any player this would be a major setback, for a player in a contract year however -- it's devastating. It's unknown if Maclin will be brought back next year (fingers crossed), as it depends on his recovery, and how this year works out without him.
4. The Battle For The No.2 WR Spot
This is quickly (and deservedly so) becoming one of the closest watched Training
Camp battles in the NFL. Who will take over for veteran Maclin? I think it's a two-way battle between Damaris Johnson and Riley Cooper (though Arrelious Benn and Jason Avant will take snaps on the outside), but all fingers seem to point to Cooper.
Today (7/28) Eagles GM Howie Roseman praised Cooper's ability to fight for the ball, and even seemed confident he would win the job. No final verdict yet, but I think it's safe to assume Cooper is the favorite.
