NFL Team: Green Bay Packers
Pick No: 26
Player Name: Datone Jones
Height/Weight: 6’4", 283
The Vitals: Jones is a monster. During his Senior year he had 19 tackles for a loss including 6.5 sacks.
He is able to find running backs regularly and get them tackled. His size makes him a force to be reckoned with and he joins a Packers defense where he will be plugged in from day one.
A better pick would have been: I think that the Packers could have gone a number of different ways here. Jones likely would have been available at the start of the second round, so trading back could have been a nice decision. If they could have gotten the deal that the Vikings were offering for the 29th pick, they would have done well to take it.
I would have liked them to give more consideration to Sylvester Williams who went two picks later. They could have also considered a player like Eddie Lacy, although I was glad they decided to wait on that position.
The Verdict: Overall I can certainly live with this pick. It fills a need, which is typical for the Packers. I think that Jones will be a solid player, but likely will not be a star for the Packers.
He will do his job and do it well, but I think it will take a little time before he is relied on as a consistent starter. Getting a strong player on defense though was important for a team that had trouble stopping teams like the 49ers and their vicious rushing game.
