Who didn’t see this coming? It’s the most obvious need for the New York Jets and the most urgent.
Sadly, Mark Sanchez has not developed since the Jets’ last AFC Championship appearance in 2010. He has not stepped up and become the intelligent, game-manager that the Jets are built for. Sanchez gave hope to Jets nation last year, achieving a career high in touchdowns, touchdowns per attempt, and completion percentage; however, his mistakes proved costly and they were ever evident to the fans.
Sanchez' performances during the final three games of the season, in which he completed 56% of his passes and threw for 5 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, were reminiscent of his rookie year. Some would argue that his play, especially in Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins, lost the game for the New York Jets. This isn’t a completely fair assessment; however, it shows fans’ sentiments toward the starting QB.
It seems as if the Sanchez that finished last season carried over seamlessly to 2012. He is currently boasting a career low in touchdowns per completion and his highest interceptions per attempt since his rookie year. He is more of a liability out there than anything.
The New York Jets need a new starting quarterback by the beginning of the 2013 season. They need to either evaluate the team under Greg McElroy’s direction, or obtain a new quarterback through the draft, trade or free agency.
On Tuesday, December 18th, the New York Jets announced that they will be starting Greg McElroy in Week 16 against the San Diego Chargers. Maybe the wish of a new starter in 2013 will come true.
The 2012 season has been a forgettable one for the New York Jets. From the Tim Tebow media frenzy to Fireman Ed’s early retirement, the franchise and fan base have dealt with enough madness for one season. Unfortunately, it's still alive and kicking.
There will be no Cinderella story for the Jets this year. It's another missed opportunity with no playoff appearance. After two less than stellar years, everyone associated with the franchise has had enough.
The Jets need a lot to change in the future, but for the time being, here are five things they can put on their holiday wish list.
Happy Holidays!
