New York Giants: Playoffs!!! Are You Serious?

The New York Giants were once 6-2 and leading the NFC eastern Division by 2.5 games. Now with only 2 games remaining in the season, the Giants are in a 3-way tie with Washington and Dallas at 8-6. Technically, the Giants are in 3rd place based on divisional records of the three teams.

With games at Baltimore and at home in their final game against the Eagles, the Giants must rely on not only themselves on winning both games, but also help from other teams as well.  Let’s paint the scenario for the last 2 games and the possible teams involved:

Giants (8-6): Last 2 games: Baltimore Ravens and the Philadelphia Eagles

Redskins (8-6): Last 2 games: Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys (8-6) Last 2 games: New Orleans Saints and the Washington Redskins

Bears (8-6) Last 2 games: Arizona Cardinals and the Detroit Lions

Vikings (8-6) Last 2 games: Houston Texans and the Green Bay Packers

Seahawks (9-5): Last 2 games: San Francisco 49ers and the St. Louis Rams

Notable teams with a very slim chance are the New Orleans Saints and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both at 6-8. Let’s assume that these two teams are not in contentions for a playoff spot even though they mathematically still alive.

I believe the Seahawks will secure one of the wild cards, unless they totally implode in their final two games. A reasonable guess here would be that the Seahawks finish at 10-6.

The Vikings have the toughest two remaining games on the schedule and based on their recent history in big games late in the season; they will finish most likely 9-7. The Bears could finish strong with a 10-6 record, because of the level of competition. However, it will not be easy as the Lions will push the Bears hard and finally lose on a FG, Bears finish at 10-6.

That leaves with the three eastern division teams and based on remaining schedule and recent performance of all three teams, the Giants will most likely finish at 9-7, but could collapse and finish 8-8. Dallas has a good chance to finish at 10-6, but something tells me that the Cowboys will find a way to lose one of their remaining two games. The Redskins control their dynasty and should they finish 10-6, they will obviously win the NFC Eastern Division.

Division Champs: Redskins/Packers/49ers/Falcons

Wild Card Teams: Seahawks and Bears
