In a recent interview Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ running back LeGarrette Blount was quoted as saying (concerning Tampa Bay potentially drafting running back Trent Richardson), “I would not like that pick and I would definitely not be happy with that pick."
In case Blount was unaware or forgotten, he is playing in the NFL, and the NFL is a league focused on results. The goal of every NFL team is win a Super Bowl and if a player cannot effectively contribute to that goal, then the team finds another player who can effectively contribute.
Last season, when Kyle Orton was not getting the job done in Denver, Tim Tebow found a way to win, and remained the starting quarterback for the rest of the season. In 2010, when Washington Redskins' quarterback Donovan McNabb was not getting the job done, Rex Grossman replaced him. Michael Vick is still in Philadelphia and Kevin Kolb is in Arizona, because at the time Vick posted better results than Kolb.
Additionally, Blount won the starting job in Tampa Bay after poor performances in the 2010 season, by Earnest Graham and Cadillac Williams. Blount made a name for himself in Tampa Bay as he flew over defenders and rushed for 1,007 yards and six touchdowns. In 2011, his yard total fell to 781, as he rushed for 75 or fewer yards in 10 of the 14 games he played that season.
Instead of criticizing his team’s potential moves in this year’s Draft, Blount should be thankful that he is even playing in the NFL, after punching an opposing player in college, not being drafted, punching a teammate while with the Tennessee Titans.
Additionally, in his, two seasons in the league Blount fumbled the ball six times, and last week new Head Coach Greg Schiano called Blount out, saying those who consistently fumbled the ball will not play.
Maybe, Blount needs to stop talking so much and work on humility, and his ball control issues.
Running the Asylum
How Schiano and his staff handle this situation is going to set the tone for Tampa Bay going into the 2012 season. Last season Head Coach Raheem Morris made a comment to the effect that the players were not listening to him, and I made the comment that it was like patients running the asylum.
Blount has no right publicly criticizing his team, especially over something that has not even occurred yet, and Schiano needs to make sure Blount knows that. Blount needs to get on board with the new Tampa Bay Buccaneers, or find somewhere else to run his mouth.
Blount has some talent, but if he does not focus on football, then he will continue to fail until he is out of the league. Richardson may or may not end up in Tampa Bay, but maybe Richardson would offer Blount the incentive he needs to reemerge as a relevant running back.
