It's been an eventful day for Jeremy Shockey.

First, a report by Gary Myers of the New York Daily News stated that the tight end wants to return to his former team, the New York Giants. Shockey, who played with the Carolina Panthers in 2011, is currently an unrestricted free agent. The Giants are in need of tight end depth - both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum tore their ACLs in the Super Bowl XLVI victory over the New England Patriots. The team addressed this need by signing former Dallas Cowboys tight end Martellus Bennett to a one-year, $2.5 million deal yesterday. But would they consider a reunion with Shockey?

This is also the same Shockey whose tenure with the Giants included constant whining whenever quarterback Eli Manning didn't get the ball to him. It all came to a head after the 2007 Super Bowl-winning season, when Shockey got into a shouting match with General Manager Jerry Reese. Reese then traded Shockey to the New Orleans Saints prior to the 2008 season.

As if that wasn't enough of a stir for one day, Shockey engaged in a Twitter "fight" with former teammate Amani Toomer. (Yes, this is further proof that Twitter is fast becoming the internet's version of the bathroom wall.)

Toomer doesn't think it's a good idea for Shockey to return to the Giants. He tweeted his thoughts this morning, including, "Bad teammate, worse person."

True to form, Shockey took the bait and blasted Toomer via his Twitter account, including the following:
  • "Amani Toomer on Jeremy Shockey: Bad teammate, Haha. Well he was the lazy one that broke my leg!!"
  • "Yes remember when his ex divorced him and he urinated on her cloths I guess he’s the good person." (A reference to an allegation Toomer's ex-wife made during their contentious  divorce. By the way, it's spelled "clothes," Jeremy...)
  • "Go get a bucket of rocks and start throwing them at your glass house."
Toomer replied by tweeting, "Shockey,Thanks 4 proving my statement about being a bad person. Lieing about my EX.Low blow.Enough said.Have a nice day& good luck as a FA." (Again, nice spelling, Amani.)

To which Shockey replied, "Nothing but love in my mind.. I'm at peace can't let the negative people bring me down! #growup"

Oh, how childish it all is. And people wonder why the unemployment rate is still so high.

But this "fight" underscores one key point - the Giants should not re-sign Shockey. Aside from his history with the team, he is coming off a season where he only caught 37 passes, is injury-prone, and was recently contemplating retirement. And it's no coincidence that the team has now won two Super Bowls without him in the locker room.

Shockey should've learned a thing or two from another former teammate, running back Tiki Barber (who attempted an ill-fated comeback last year.) The Giants may forgive, but they don't forget.

Now get back to tweeting.
