Blaine GabbertAccording to team officials and the man himself, Blaine Gabbert is on schedule to start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Gabbert has missed the past two preseason games with a fractured thumb, but was named the starter after impressing the coaching staff prior to his injury. Veteran Chad Henne closed out the preseason against Philadelphia and Atlanta.

In a story that was reported on, “'s Michael DiRocco watched Gabbert take part in most individual drills at Monday's practice. Gabbert threw the ball extensively, but he did not take snaps under center or shotgun. DiRocco wrote that Gabbert is on track to start the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs."

Now, the team will wait to see how the hand responds to the practice time Gabbert put in on Monday with the hope things will still be on track for Sunday’s game.

"This is what we expected to see," Bradley said in a press conference after Monday's practice. "I think Wednesday will be a big sign to see if he's still in the right direction. Even after today, we'll see how his thumb came out of it."

Gabbert has been much maligned over the course of the past two-plus seasons. He looks to have turned a corner this preseason, however slight it might be. The progression was enough to make Henne a backup again,  but frankly, I thought from scrimmages and practices, the two were about even.

If Gabbert is able to give the offense a boost, like he showed in the first half of the game against the Jets.

In other camp news:

* The team completed its practice squad roster. The team signed fullback Lonnie Pryor on Monday, but named these seven other players to the squad over the weekend. Offensive linemen Drew Nowak, quarterback Matt Scott, defensive end, Ryan Davis, cornerback, Marcus Burley, wide receivers Jeremy Ebert and Tobias Palmer and safety Steven Terrell.

* Either Mike Brown or Ace Sanders will start opposite Cecil Shorts on Sunday. Justin Blackmon is not ineligible to play the first four games of the season because he violated the league’s substance abuse policy.

* This is the third year in a row the team starts the season with a new head coach. Jack Del Rio was on the sidelines in 2011. Mike Mularkey in 2012 and now Gus Bradley in 2013.
