674 Views 19 Comments launched on June 14, 2011 and quickly planted its flag on the sporting landscape.

There is one group to thank: Our growing army of writers. They are the lifeblood of Football Nation, the citizen soldiers who carried FN’s Old Glory of the gridiron onto the sports-media battlefield. Put most simply, Football Nation’s victories during its debut season would not be possible without them.
Football Nation began with a clean slate in June. Today, the FN team is now more than 1,000 contributors strong – growing each day – and they have already published more than 4,000 articles.
With our very first campaign now in the rear view mirror, it’s the perfect time to hand out battle stars to our top performers – those writers who went above and beyond the call of duty, helped establish FN as a budding superpower and began to earn recognition for themselves beyond the pages of FN.
These awards will become an annual event. Consider them tokens of appreciation from a grateful Football Nation.

FN Writer Of The Year– $500
Scott Kacsmar

"Captain Comeback" Scott Kacsmar turned the Football Nation platform into a reputation as a rising star in the football media.
His Captain Comeback column was one of the most widely read columns in the FN portfolio, Kacsmar himself was our most-read contributor, and his work was widely quoted in major media around the country, from ESPN to numerous newspapers, websites and chat boards. He was also contacted by NFL Network late in the season to help with one of its research projects and wowed them with his professionalism.
Kacsmar drove his own success, with great research and writing, prolific posts on Twitter and his own outreach to the sports media. He earned 74 Game Balls during the season and along the way become the first Football Nation writer to be paid for his work. He used FN to continue to establish his voice in the sports media and is a great example of the power of the growing Football Nation platform.

FN Column Of The Year– $250
“Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups” by Jared Dang
Jared delivered his incredibly in-depth “Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Pickups” column each week during the NFL season. His unique brand of analysis was a hit with the FN audience, as 12 of his “Waiver Wire” pieces attracted over 1,000 views.

Most Popular FN Story of the Year– $250
“Week 3 Power Rankings: Bills? Lions? Yup, Really” by Jeff Sperber
Jeff’s article “Week 3 Power Rankings: Bills? Lions? Yup, Really” accumulated a whopping 24,612 views, the most of any Football Nation article to date. It serves as a great example of how any article can catch fire via social media outlets.

FN Inside Access Award – $150
Jennifer Trosclair
Jennifer worked her connections with the New Orleans Saints this year and was able to land interviews with wide receivers Lance Moore and Robert Meachem, and punter Thomas Morstead.

Best NFL Playoff & Super Bowl Coverage – $150
Tom Pollin
Tom stepped up to the plate during the NFL’s “second season”, delivering 20 well-researched articles such as “Greatest Snow/Weather Games In NFL Playoff History”, “Ten Forgotten Plays In Super Bowl History” and “Recipe For A Wildcard Streak”.

FN Beat Writer of the Year – $150
Alan K. Fox
Alan provided blanket coverage of the Oregon Ducks during the college football season.  In addition to a weekly column, Alan published an interview with running back Kenjon Barner, was a frequent guest on Football Nation’s SiriusXM radio show, and even snapped his own game photos from field level at Duck games.

FN Assignment King (Published Most FN Assignments) – $150
Shawn Kopf
Shawn converted more FN assignments into published articles than anyone on our writer team (71 as of February 18). Look up the word “reliability” in the dictionary, and you’ll find Shawn’s FN profile.

FN Ball Hog (Most Game Balls) – $150
Jason Stolberg
Jason has earned more FN Game Balls (112 as of February 18) than anyone in our army of writers. Jason’s specialty is Fantasy Football analysis, as evidenced by his weekly game-by-game previews and recaps.

FN Workhorse Awards–$150 each

John Garces
John has published 102 articles for Football Nation. His clever weekly columns “NFL Picks,” “NFL Red Carpet,” College Football Picks,” and “College Football Red Carpet” were staples throughout the football season.

Anthony King
Anthony has written 99 articles and earned 74 Game Balls. If you peruse Anthony’s FN profile, you’ll find remarkable diversity in the subject matter he covered.

Daniel Hutchinson
Daniel has produced 88 articles and earned 84 Game Balls. His sweet spot may be the ACC and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he’s proven he can tackle any football topic in the NFL or NCAA.

Congratulations to all Football Nation writers, the first ever Award winners and everyone who contributed to an exciting first year. Together, we have an opportunity to build something fabulous together and 2011 was a great beginning. We are building the first, all football all the time digital footprint and community. @Fballnation/ will be adding technology and as many great features, monthly writer workshops, incentives, and distribution . The more you all believe and proactively contribute, the faster and farther we will go. As I sat in the stands in Indy, realizing I was again going to witness my Patriots fall to the Giants, Football Nation's initial traction and success overpowered any thoughts that 2011 wasn't a great football year. Thank you from all of us and onward. There truly is nothing! Like football. -Andrew:Founder,Football Nation

Grats to everyone who won. Honestly, I feel like the 10 articles a month to qualify is a little steep to rank for a paid position, though, just to be honest. You guys should have a more comprehensive way of ranking the material that your writers submit. I would also note that it's especially hard for people who are professional writers to submit ten articles a month for "game balls' — even if they enjoy writing for you — just to get the chance to get some paid articles.

You writers have provided me with a consistent volume of informative, humorous, not even dreamed of before, reasoned football statistics. At 57.5 wins ATS every game, a winning number, how is it I lost last year? Seems you ought teaching us how to, properly, bet, also.
