For 57:48, the Jacksonville Jaguars were winning this game.

A late touchdown gave Philadelphia a 31-24 win at EverBank Field.

Even with a loss, there was plenty to look at, expand and believe this team is headed in the right direction.

And yes, maybe a controversy is beginning at the quarterback position for both teams. This was a game the Jaguars did not need to win, but steady play was a necessity. The team responded when it needed to. Less turnovers, and more excitement on offense. This team scored 24 points, had a few great drives and the pass rush was good in the first half.

There will be cuts made this week as teams begin to trim their roster down to 75 players and then 53 after the fourth preseason game of the year. There will be more tough decisions made by this coaching staff this coming week.

Here is what we learned from tonight’s game…

Michael Vick can still run

He was flushed out of the pocket several times by the Jaguars defense. That was a good thing to see. but even a player with his age and the fact he gets hit so many times on the field, he can still run for daylight and move the chains. Michael Vick caused nightmares at times for the Jaguars defense.

Jordan Todman made the team

After a 100+ yard performance, the Jaguars needed someone to be the second team runner. I think they found one tonight. Todman’s 63-yard burst showed he should make this roster and be given a chance to be the backup. No offense to Justin Forsett, who has been injured, but Todman earned this - even if Forsett was on the field.

Better ball control

And less penalties.  This was a much better effort this game. Chad Henne played well. The receivers played well and moved the chains. The offense is going to miss Justin Blackmon after this coming week. There were real positive things to say about possession and movement. Jedd Fisch’s offense looks to be a keeper.

Coming up big

Both Jeremy Mincey and Andre Branch had a sack in the first half. That means they played against the first unit offensive line. The middle of the defense also played well. Mincey solidified his game last wee. Branch, who has been rumored to be a bubble guy, solidifued his this week. Now, we all wait to see what happens.

Rookies played well

The return of Luke Joeckel was huge. He played well in the offensive game plan. Denard Robinson looked good. Dwayne Gratz had another interception on the night. Two for the preseason, if you are counting. And Johanthan Cyprien played well in the secondary as well.  A good night for the rookies all around.
