At 4:00 p.m. eastern on Tuesday afternoon the free agency period began for 2014. It was a busy day in the NFL with many of signings, but one seemed to stand out above all others. Late Tuesday night it was announced that former New England Patriots defensive back Aqib Talib had signed with the Denver Broncos.

Talib signed a six year deal worth 57 million dollars with 26 million of it being guaranteed. This was a huge signing for the Broncos who had a weakness in their secondary last season. The departure of Champ Bailey earlier this offseason made this signing even more crucial for the Broncos in restoring their talent pool on defense for 2014.

Talib’s signing for the Broncos makes it two straight seasons that the Broncos took a key piece from their AFC rival the New England Patriots. In the 2013 offseason the Broncos signed Tom Brady’s top receiver Wes Welker to a deal that would help lead Denver to a number of offensive records in 2013. If this Talib signing is anywhere near as effective as the Welker signing was for Denver then it will be a great pick up for the Broncos.

Talib was the 20th overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Talib was a star defensive back at the University of Kansas Jayhawks. Talib is one of the few NFL stars to come out of Kansas and find great success as a pro. Talib then became a star with the Patriots the past couple of seasons, which led him to earning this big time contract with 26 million guaranteed from the Broncos.

I feel this deal will be great for the Broncos in their quest to return to the Super Bowl next season. The Broncos set offensive records in almost every category imaginable last year, but their downfall came on the defensive side of the ball. Talib will give the Broncos a shut down corner that was much needed down the stretch last season. This will certainly help the Broncos as they face pass happy offenses in today’s NFL.

This pickup was one of the homerun signings in day one of NFL’s free agency. Talib adds to the rich talent pool that the Broncos have accumulated over the pass several seasons. The Broncos have star defensive end Von Miller and with Talib in the secondary he will be able to rush the passer even more in 2014. Talib with the Broncos in 2014 will certainly be exciting to watch and only time will tell if it helps lead them back to the Super Bowl next season.
