Dallas Cowboys Offseason Blueprint Version 2.0
In my original version, I laid out a plan to keep DeMarcus Ware and still be plenty active in free agency with a few creative restructures. The Cowboys opted to outright release Ware along with Austin and still bagged Melton. The Cowboys still have a solid $13 million in cap space and now hold 11 draft choices withe awarded compensatory picks.
Erin Henderson LB(MIN) - The Cowboys initially had a deal with Will Herring that fell through, they still could stand to address their depth at linebacker. Henderson is a big and sturdy player inside, if he still has starting ability the Cowboys have somewhat of an opening at strong side linebacker, but they need a guy who can stop the bleeding if Sean Lee goes down. Henderson was cut from a $2 million a year deal, so they could bag him for close to half that at this point.
Ryan Clark FS(PIT) - Clark is a solid veteran player the Cowboys could add to the mix for a look and some insurance if JJ Wilcox doesn't take the next step or simply to help develop a nickle package featuring Barry Church at LB. This could be a minimal deal similar to Will Allen last year, he is a smart player, his only time missed was due to not being able to play in altitude in Denver, he won't have that problem as Dallas won't play in Denver for at least three years.
Anthony Spencer DE(resign) - At this point the price should be right for a safe deal to bring back Spencer who really has been the most clutch and consistent pass rusher the previous two seasons before his injury last year.
Chris Johnson RB(TEN) - Johnson has not yet been let go officially, but once the offseason program starts April 7th, the Titans don't want to risk an injury to Johnson under their watch. Johnson still has two years left before he hits 30, Demarco Murray is in a contract season yet to play a full season, but Johnson has only missed one game his entire career. He can apply home run threat and give the Cowboys a quality runner at all times. If nothing else, he can steal carries from Murray making him cheaper to resign next year as Knowshon Moreno and Maurice Jones-Drew found out how devalued the running back position has become.
The Cowboys were awarded 3 compensatory selections all in the 7th round, I don't anticipate the Cowboys making six 7th round picks. I am projecting they be very active in the mid rounds, using one pick to move up in the 4th or 5th round and packaging two of them to get into the 6th round, the compensatory picks of course can't be traded.
1st - Zach Martin OT Notre Dame
2nd - Ra'Shede Hageman DT Minnesota
3rd - Jackson Jeffcoat DE Texas
4th - Kareem Martin DE North Carolina
5th - Aaron Murray QB Georgia
6th - Josh Huff WR Oregon
7th - Aaron Colvin CB Oklahoma
7th - Isaiah Crowell RB Alabama State
7th - Trey Millard FB Oklahoma
This group should help restock the lines for the future and give them some quality developmentalprospects at some skill positions.
