The Cleveland Browns are a hot mess right now.  How bad is it?  Josh McDaniels withdrew his name for consideration for the head coaching job.

And so then there was one.

But all is not lost.  It is a new year and so a time for fresh starts.  The Browns can start by making and sticking to these three new years resolutions.

NFL Draft/Coaching Decision

The Browns have two first round picks in the upcoming draft.  They have the fourth pick and the pick acquired from the Indianapolis Colts.  All the buzz is about the available quarterbacks in this year's draft.  But with the fourth pick will quality be left?

The Browns' first resolution is not to reach for a quarterback in the first round.  How is Brandon Weeden working out for you?

The Browns dismissed coach Rob Chudzinski after one season.  It is apparent this is not the position the organization coaching candidates are prioritizing.

Two most important decisions will be the first two decisions by the organziation.

The Browns' need to resolve to go for quality in the draft and with a new head coach.  Don't panic, don't settle, quality needs to be the resolution mantra.

Brian Hoyer

When starter Brandon Weeden went down with a thumb injury, ex-coach Chudzinski made a surprise move and bypassed Jason Campbell for Brian Hoyer.  Nice move Chudzinski.

Before exiting the game against the Buffalo Bills with a torn ACL, Hoyer was 3-0.  Hoyer finished his short season with 615 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions.  He amassed a quarterback rating of 82.6.

Yes, it was a short sample size but Hoyer passed the eye test.  He played better than both Weeden and Campbell.  He made his tight-end Jordan Cameron a weapon on the field.  And he excelled in making wide receiver Josh Gordon a major threat.

The Browns' need to resolve to get Hoyer back by starting camp, naming him the starting quarterback.

Josh Gordon

Gordon was suspended for the first two games for violation of the NFL substance abuse policy.  He returned only to lead the NFL and set a franchise record of 1,646 receiving yards.  Gordon did this with three different quarterbacks tossing him the ball.

Gordon's resolution is to keep off whatever landed him on the no play list for two games.
