The Chicago Bears travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday night to take on a struggling Steelers team.
The Bears will be facing an offense that ranks near the bottom of the NFL in most major statistical categories.
For a Bears defense that has struggled at times this season this could be just the remedy for what ails them. Pittsburgh averages just 37.5 rushing yards per game and is 31st in the NFL in total offense.
In addition to that they have a banged up offensive line that has had trouble protecting Ben Roethlisberger.
Chicago has had trouble getting a consistent pass rush out of their defense and this could be the game where they break out and get a number of sacks.
Defensive end Julius Peppers has been nearly invincible through two games and the Bears’ franchise player, Henry Melton, has barely had his name called. Not being able to get pressure on the quarterback has allowed for Bears opponents to convert 51.9 percent of their third downs. That is tied with St. Louis for last in the NFL.
Although the Bears have not been able to generate any pressure this season they have been doing what they’ve done for years: take the ball away. Chicago is tied for second in the NFC with six takeaways returning one of them into a touchdown. Against an offense that has had trouble moving the ball this season there could plenty of opportunities for the Bears to force Pittsburgh into turnovers.
Pittsburgh’s defense has zero takeaways this season and protecting the ball will be very important for the Bears. Jay Cutler has five turnovers in his first two games this season and he must protect the ball better Sunday night in Pittsburgh.
Cutler has done a good job so far this season of not making the crucial, game-changing turnover. The Bears have had to overcome fourth quarter deficits in both their wins this season and Cutler has been great in leading those winning drives by not forcing the ball into coverage.
For years Pittsburgh has been one of the better teams in the NFL. They have been to three Super Bowls since 2005, winning two, but this season looks like it could be a long one. They have no real playmakers on offense and a poor running game leads to predictable play calling.
The Bears are an opportune defense and when they know what the offense is going to do they will feast. People want to believe that the Steelers will play better because they are desperate for a win. It could just be that they are a bad team. The Bears have played much better this season than Pittsburgh and Sunday night’s game could be a long one for the Steelers.
