Sack artist Cameron Wake has inked a four-year extension with the Miami Dolphins worth $49M. The pact will keep him in town through the 2016 campaign, with $20M financially guaranteed.
This is great news for fans of the AFC East franchise, as Wake was holding out of OTAs while waiting for a boost on his meager $615,000 salary.
The former CFL powerhouse has collected 28 sacks over three tours of duty with the Dolphins, with a high of 14 coming in 2010. And while he dipped to 8.5 sacks last season, he was still widely regarded as one of the finest 3-4 rush linebackers in the NFL. He most notably chipped in a sack in three of his last four meetings with elite division rival New England.
As a side note, Wake should make a successful transition to right defensive end in new defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle's 4-3 base scheme, evidenced by Miami's confidence to award him with the lucrative new deal that he coveted.
