Jay Cutler isn't being drafted as a No. 1 quarterback for this fantasy football season. This is good news for you.
This year Cutler will produce like a top five fantasy quarterback. Here are five reasons why:
5. Joe Flacco effect
Cutler is in a contract year. Cutler on his contract, "I haven't thought about it in a while, actually. I'll probably address it once in training camp, once before the season and that's kind of it. I'm not going to talk about it. That stuff takes care of itself. As long as we're winning football games and I'm playing well, hopefully they keep me around."
Every quarterback knows that Flacco rolled the dice and won. Cutler is a gambler, you have seen him play, right? He knows that if he plays well, he will get paid well. This extra incentive should be worth an extra couple of touchdowns.
4. Matt Forte
Last season under Mike Tice, Matt Forte caught a career low 44 passes for 340 yards. The previous year, Forte caught 52 passes for 490 yards and a touchdown in only 12 games.
The new coach, Marc Trestman, and new offensive coordinator, Aaron Kromer, have stated they want Forte to be heaily involved in the passing game. More weapons for Cutler equals more production for your fantasy team.
3. Speaking of Weapons
Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery and new tight end Martellus Bennett are weapons that cannot be overlooked. Marshall and Cutler are the dynamic duo. Last year Marshall was on the end of 118 passes for 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jeffery is getting his NFL legs. Last year he collected 367 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. And now the offense includes a dependable tight end in Bennett.
Cutler is surrounded with capable options. He won't miss.
2. Kyle Long
Okay, it is not just Long. The acquisition of Long in the draft notified the offensive line it is time to step up. Last season in 15 games Cutler was sacked 38 times losing 250 yards. He fumbled the ball eight times. The offensive line let Cutler down, both figuratively and literally.
This year in addition to Long the offensive line has been upgraded. Joining Long will be Jerman Bushrod and Matt Slauson. If they can keep Cutler from running for his life, Cutler will only see improvement.
1. New Coach
Marc Trestman is a quarterback guru. Or at least that is the word. He has also included quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh.
Cutler on Trestman, "But he's an offensive guy, he understands the quarterback position, he understands the pressure we're under, he understands how to make it easier for us."
The quarterback guru paired with the quarterback who has all the potential. Last season with a bad offensive line and a defensive coach, Cutler passed for 3,033 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had 14 interceptions.
This year expect Cutler to surpass 4,000 yards while lowering his interception numbers in half. Also expect him to double his number of touchdowns.
Not bad for where you are going to get him in the draft.
