Werner Press Release: March 17, 2013
From: Tampa Bay Buccaneers, General Manager: Daniel Hutchinson (don't worry Mark Dominik, your job is secure)
To: The Readers of Football Nation

After going 7-9 in 2012, many expect the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are going to use the 13th overall pick of this year’s NFL Draft to select either a defensive back or a player that plays the safety position.

However, the Buccaneers have signed safety Dashon Goldson, are in talks with the New York Jets about trading for defensive back Darrelle Revis, and there is a great expectation that Ronde Barber will return for a  17th season.

With all that said, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are planning to make Bjoern Werner the target of their first round pick in the 2013 Draft.

However, with Tampa Bay trying to sign or trade for key players, Tampa Bay would entertain trades that would help Tampa Bay be able to get additionally picks in this year's Draft.

These picks would be used on defensive players and key offensive positions. Having several extra picks could help us develop talent for the future.

Werner played his college football for the Atlantic Coastal Conference's Florida State Seminoles and would be a great fit for the Buccaneers, first of all because he is already used to practicing and playing in a Floridian environment. In his three seasons with the Seminoles Werner accumulated 99 total tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 23.5 sacks, one interception, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

In 2012 alone Werner was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, a Consensus All-American and had the most sacks in the ACC and the third most sacks in the NCAA with 13.

Werner is good at moving at the snap of the ball, getting past his offensive counterpart and is able to either get to the quarterback, the ball carrier or is able to break up passes.

Tampa Bay has questions about the status of defensive end Da'Quan Bowers, let Michael Bennett go to the Seattle Seahawks, dealt with several injuries last season on the line, and finished near the bottom of the league in 2012 in total sacks. Werner would be a good player to come into Tampa Bay and bring some energy and intensity to Tampa Bay's defense.

If Werner were not available then second and third choices for our first round pick would be Damontre Moore from Texas A&M and Sheldon Richardson from Missouri.
