Matthew StaffordThe loss of Avril will not be a rough patch job. Ziggy Ansah has all the tools to have an equally better success rate than Avril during his time in Detroit.

Ansah was the best pick for a glaring need at both book ends. The choice of whether he will cover Avril or Vanden Bosch's slot remains to be determined, but he will have a solid rookie season and will make a significant impact for the Lions' defensive set.

I also marked out when they selected CB Darius Slay in the 2nd round. I have a great amount of respect for his abilities and he still has room to grow.

He fills another void in the Lions' defense, and will prove to be an excellent shutdown corner. He will also make a significant impact in the Lions' defensive set. He was my second rated coverage corner entering the draft, yes, behind Milliner.

Larry Warford was another excellent addition as he can provide interior blocking, or the Lions may experiment with moving him over to tackle, where they also needed depth additions. Warford was the only addition made to the offensive line this offseason to current date, but they may make a deal or sign another tackle before the preseason begins.

Undrafted free agent tackle Austin Holtz may stick around and make the roster, he does have plenty of room to grow and is a good developmental option for the Lions. Still, it's looking like another rough season for Stafford, but if they move Warford over to tackle, the protection and opening of running lanes should improve.

The remainder of the draft and undrafted free agents are developmental picks. Only DE Devin Taylor will see some reps this season. In free agency the Lions did make some good signings by adding RB Reggie Bush to their starting lineup, immediately a 1,000-yard rushing prospect, who can allow Stafford to breath a bit easier on passing downs, should the line improve as mentioned above.

They added Jason Jones, who had 5 sacks for Titans last season, and can slide into the other DE slot opposite of Ansah.

Ther's plenty of upside to the Lions this season, and they should be in the thick of the chase for the division title. They may not be strong enough to reach the division title, but they will return to the playoffs next season. There's plenty to be excited about in Detroit, the team is back on the right track.
