The Minnesota Vikings put on the pads for the first time in the 2012 training camp in Mankato, Minnesota this afternoon after completing their 3-day acclimation period and a day off on Sunday.
All eyes have been on rookie left tackle Matt Kalil, matching up against defensive end Jared Allen, Adrian Peterson's knee rehab and Percy Harvin's attitude. Let's take a look at a few keys from the first practice in pads and the first few days of Vikings training camp.
Matt Kalil vs. Jared Allen
The Vikings drafted Kalil out of USC with the fourth overall pick to protect the blindside of QB Christian Ponder and all eyes where on the Kalil's match up with the best defensive end in the league, Jared Allen in the first full contact practice today.
Kalil will reap huge benefits in his learning curve by matching up with Jared in practice, but in his first practice he certainly wasn't able to manhandle the Pro-Bowl defensive end, but he did look solid throughout the practice.
A Scare with Adrian Peterson
AP is still on the camp PUP list, but has been working hard at his rehab on the sidelines. He was sent to the ER today by some wayward seafood in his lunch at camp after he suffered an allergic reaction. All indications are that All-Day will be back at it tomorrow straining the rope as Certified Athletic Trainer Eric Sugarman tries to hold him back on his power sprints.
Percy Harvin is Fully Committed
After the morning walk through this morning, Percy Harvin talked briefly with Vikings play caller Paul Allen on FM 100.3 KFAN and new sideline report Ben Leiber. Percy was asked about the emotional situation at minicamp where he allegedly asked for a trade and where things are now. Percy's simple response “It's over with!” and you can look for Percy to focus on the task at hand.
Percy suffered an injury to his arm in practice and was taken off the field, only to return minutes later and rejoin the team with no ill effects.
The Vikings may have been a bottom feeder at 3-13 last season, but the team is looking for a huge improvement this year as they work to claw their way back to relevance in the NFC North.
