The NFL has been playing games on Thanksgiving Day since the first year of its existence (when the league was named the American Professional Football League. Since 1920 there has been at least one game played on that day each year, except from 1941 to 1944.
In 1934 the Lions, in their first year in Detroit after playing from 1930 to 1933 as the Portsmouth Spartans, began their tradition of Thanksgiving Day home games. In 1966 the Dallas Cowboys joined them as annual Thanksgiving Day hosts.
When the American Football League began in 1960 they also made a Thanksgiving Day game an annual part of their schedule. That first year the Dallas Texans (later the Kansas City Chiefs) traveled to face the New York Titans (soon to be the Jets). Dallas lost in a tight, high-scoring game 41-35.
